Publisher”s Memo
Major Milestone
Balancing the well-documented tightrope between print and online media
is a major challenge for publishers
today. More people “get” the immediacy of digital delivery while a great number of our constituents love the feel of print in their hands.
Some would prefer to scroll through headlines
on their BlackBerries while others want to stroll
through news and features at a more leisurely
pace. How do you satisfy both needs and alienate no one?
We have—we think—come up with an answer.
Mind you, it's not The Answer, but one that I believe will work for our highly valued
readers and loyal advertisers. With that in mind, the next iteration of Real Estate
Southern California will appear as a special editorial addition to Real Estate Forum's
May/June issue.
Why are we doing this? Well, frankly in this market, nothing is launched without
an eye to cost. But there is more at work here, and more than cost, especially given
the times, is future growth. It’s a changing market, not only economically, but in
terms of publishing and new directions in reader demand. The major firms—our
primary reader base—long ago cast their nets over the national and international
waters. Whether you’re in Los Angeles, New York or New Jersey, your focus today is
probably as much national—or at least multi-regional—as it is local. The globaliza-tion of business and finance and events taking place on Wall Street (I mean Washington, DC) and thousands of miles away have dramatically revolutionized the real
estate industry.
Finally, we’re doing this after in-depth conversations with our Editorial Advisory
Board, who gave us an enlightening read on how they process news and information.
We’re doing this to maintain the print identity of Real Estate Southern California,
which is the dominant brand in the market. But we are doing it as well as a base to
launch our next big initiative--a magazine dedicated to the entire California business
marketplace—a magazine that is totally and only digital.
So just as Real Estate Forum is our print aircraft carrier and the vehicle for Real
Estate Southern California, GlobeSt.com, our online aircraft carrier, will deliver to our
West Coast readers our new digital initiative. It’s an exciting launch, scheduled for
mid-July, and we hope that you will share our enthusiasm for it.
